California joined the Union in 1850. The most populous state in the United States has nearly 40 million residents and 35 California area codes connect these residents. An area code tells you the general city or town of a caller. However, more information on an unknown caller is only available with a phone number search on a California phone numbers database.
In the early age of mobile communication, callers needed a human operator to connect them. This method was flawed for many reasons.
First, it could not support California’s population growth since there were few operators. Even though operators worked fast, they were often overwhelmed at busy times, and callers had to wait in line – something you do not want to do, especially for emergency calls. More importantly, calls were not private because an operator could listen in on conversations. Telephone companies discouraged this practice, but enforcing callers’ privacy was hard.
Soon enough, these difficulties paved the way for California area codes based on the North American Numbering Plan.
An area code is a three-digit code that represents a small geographical area within California.
Think of a phone number as a physical address and consider a typical Sacramento phone number, 916-CYY-XXXX. 916 is the area code representing a city or town within California – in this case, Sacramento. The next three digits, CYY, are the prefix code, which would mean the street name. Finally, XXXX, the line number, would be the call recipient’s house number.
There were only three California area codes in 1947. A population explosion caused the state has created thirty-five (35) area codes using overlay and geographic split. These methods let residents retain old area codes while creating new area codes for new phone owners.
Besides connecting you with the person you wish to call, you can tell a caller’s city or town by merely looking at the California area code. You will also know if the call came from a landline or mobile phone by looking at the area code. A reverse phone search takes it further and lets you see the caller’s personal information and public records.
